Events and Competitions

The club organises and competes in many different chess events, tournaments and competitions. There are opportunities to play competitive chess at all levels but also the chance to simply enjoy casual chess-based social events.

Tuesday Night Events

Tuesday is our main club night where the focus is on casual games between members and special organised events covering all sorts of chess activities and topics. We have recently had speed chess competitions, historical talks, simultaneous displays and a quiz! Check out the calendar for upcoming events.

Club Competitions

The club runs many competitions during the year. The most prestigious are the Club Championship and the Club Challengers events. The winner of the Challengers event qualifies for the Championship event the following year and is then in with a chance of becoming overall club champion and having their name immortalised on the club’s roll of honour. The championship winners date back to 1822 – over 200 years of history!

Team Competitions

Edinburgh Chess Club enters teams into local and national competitions. We currently have 8 teams playing in the local Edinburgh league and 2 teams playing in the Scottish National League. Every year we enter a team into the Richardson Cup – a knockout event to determine the strongest club in Scotland. We are proud to have won this cup for the last three years in a row!

We also have teams in other national cup competitions, in the local allegro (fast play) league, and in the local summer cup handicap competition.
