Junior Section

The club has been a centre for Scottish junior chess for many years and has fostered the development of many of Scotland’s best players – from International Master Mark Condie in the 1980’s to our present champion Freddy Waldhausen Gordon. Freddy is already an established international player, has represented Scotland in Olympiad and European teams and is the strongest Scottish junior player of all time!

In recent years the club has hosted a number of girls chess tournaments in association with Scottish and UK initiatives supporting the development of girls chess, particularly She Plays to Win.

Playing with other children and adults at the club brings all the benefits of chess whether that be concentration, critical thinking, or just having fun in a sociable environment.

Junior Training

The club provides a range of junior coaching, both for beginners learning the game and for developing young players. We have an established coaching team led by senior Scottish internationalists.

Our regular Wednesday evening junior coaching sessions for developing players are led by former Scottish Champion and FIDE chess master Neil Berry. These take place on Wednesdays 6.15pm to 7.15pm and are free to junior members of the club.

We run two popular junior training classes on Sunday mornings in conjunction with Edinburgh Chess Academy. The beginners class is at 09.30am while more experienced chess players meet at 10.45am. The details for these classes can be found here along with a form to register interest.

Junior Team and Events

The club provides the opportunity for juniors to participate in competitive chess. We run a dedicated junior team called the Tiger Cubs, which plays in the adult Edinburgh Chess League. The Tiger Cubs have been part of the Edinburgh chess scene since the 1990’s and play all their matches at home at the Club.

The Tiger Cubs also play in the Summer Cup competition, a team event which is run on a handicap basis, and they have been winners of that event on a number of occasions!

An early Tiger Cubs team!
